The density of human rhodopsin in the rods.

چکیده

The density of human rhodopsin in the rods has been estimated psych~hysically by following the change in the relative quantum sensitivity for rod vision at two wavelengths (one near the peak, the other far off on the long wave tail of the action spectrum) in the dark after a full rhodopsin bleach in a region of a typical R‘~ monochromat’s retina where cones make no contribution to threshold. Metameric matching and dark adaptation curves yield results (about 0.75 In units at 500 nm) consistent with recent densitometric estimates of Alpern and Pugh (1974) made on the normal retina.

Rheological Response and Validity of Viscoelastic Model Through Propagation of Harmonic Wave in Non-Homogeneous Viscoelastic Rods

This study is concerned to check the validity and applicability of a five parameter viscoelastic model for harmonic wave propagating in the non-homogeneous viscoelastic rods of varying density. The constitutive relation for five parameter model is first developed and validity of these relations is checked. The non-homogeneous viscoelastic rods are assumed to be initially unstressed and at rest....

Rhodopsin transgenic pigs as a model for human retinitis pigmentosa.

PURPOSE To further characterize the retinas of Pro3471Leu rhodopsin transgenic pigs, a model for human retinitis pigmentosa. METHODS Retinas from normal and transgenic pigs, newborn to 20 months old, were processed for light and electron microscopic immunocytochemical examination. RESULTS At birth, rod numbers were normal in the transgenic retinas, but their outer segments were short and di...

Abnormal photoresponses and light-induced apoptosis in rods lacking rhodopsin kinase.

Phosphorylation is thought to be an essential first step in the prompt deactivation of photoexcited rhodopsin. In vitro, the phosphorylation can be catalyzed either by rhodopsin kinase (RK) or by protein kinase C (PKC). To investigate the specific role of RK, we inactivated both alleles of the RK gene in mice. This eliminated the light-dependent phosphorylation of rhodopsin and caused the singl...

Constitutive "light" adaptation in rods from G90D rhodopsin: a mechanism for human congenital nightblindness without rod cell loss.

A dominant form of human congenital nightblindness is caused by a gly90-->asp (G90D) mutation in rhodopsin. G90D has been shown to activate the phototransduction cascade in the absence of light in vitro. Such constitutive activity of G90D rhodopsin in vivo would desensitize rod photoreceptors and lead to nightblindness. In contrast, other rhodopsin mutations typically give rise to nightblindnes...

Aging of the human photoreceptor mosaic: evidence for selective vulnerability of rods in central retina.

PURPOSE Because previous studies suggested degeneration and loss of photoreceptors in aged human retina, the spatial density of cones and rods subserving the central 43 degrees of vision as a function of age was determined. METHODS Cones and rods were counted in 27 whole mounted retinas from donors aged 27 to 90 years with macroscopically normal fundi. Photoreceptor topography was analyzed wi...
